Xenon Ion Rocket Engine

Ion engines will be fuel-efficient and more suited for space travel. Also called a solar-electric ion propulsion engine or Hall effect thruster, it’s powered by an inert and odorless xenon gas. The stunning blue glow comes from photons released by the ions as they lose energy upon leaving the engine. (continue reading.....)

BALL PISTON MACHINES

A new power machine concept has been designed and analyzed for production, and proof of principle subscale tests have been performed, with positive results. The machine design concept is applicable as a compressor, pump, motor, or engine. Simplicity of design based on spherical ball pistons enables a low moving part count, high power to weight ratio, elimination of valve train and water cooling systems, and perfect dynamic balance. The new design concept utilizes novel kinematic design to completely eliminate inertial loads that would contribute to sliding friction. Also, low leakage is maintained without piston rings by using a small clearance on the ball piston, resulting in choked flow past the ball. These features provide the potential for an engine with higher efficiency than conventional piston engines. The engine design utilizes existing recent technology to advantage, such as silicon nitride ball pistons, so a large development effort is not required. The machine having only a small number of moving parts, the design implements a modified version of the tried and proven thermodynamic Otto cycle when used as an engine. Although the small part count is an important advantage, other advantages exist that will give future engineers new-found freedom in tailoring the combustion process. One great advantage is that the stroke magnitude and rate can be different for different strokes in the cycle (i.e., intake, compression, power, and exhaust). This provides the possibility of converting more energy to shaft power by greater expansion during the power stroke compared to the compression stroke. Another advantage is the ability to complete any even number of strokes per revolution in a single rotor. This effectively multiplies the power output proportionally if the stroke is maintained constant. Current concentration is on 2 and 4 stroke designs, but 8 or 12 or more stroke rotors are feasible, only limited by centrifugal loads at high speeds for a given rotor size. In addition, rotors can be stacked axially to increase power. (continue reading.....)

SIX STROKE ENGINES

The quest for an engine which having the same or more power with higher fuel efficiency than the existing ones has started before many years. As a result of all these researches a new engine concept is formed, which is a six stroke engine. Lot of research works are conducting on this topic nowadays and already six types of six stroke engines were discovered yet. Of these the resent developed three six stroke engines, i.e., Beare head, Bruce crowers and Velozeta’s are undergoing tremendous research works.During every cycle in a typical four stroke engine, piston moves up and down twice in the chamber, resulting in four total strokes and one of which is the power stroke that provides the torque to move the vehicle. But in a six stroke engine there are six strokes and out of these there are two power strokes. The automotive industry may soon be revolutionized by a new six-stroke design which adds a second power stroke, resulting in much more efficiency with less amount of pollution.

DIRECT SHIFT GEARBOX (DSG)

DSG is well capable of meeting the high demands in comfort from drivers who favour automatic gearboxes. Furthermore, with direct selection and lightning fast, jolt-free gear changes, it also offers a high level of driving enjoyment to drivers who favour manual gearboxes. In both cases, fuel consumption is at a par with economical vehicles fitted with manual gearboxes. Currently, the world of transmission is dominated in Europe by manual gearboxes and in the USA and Japan by automatic gearboxes. Both types of gearboxes have specific advantages and disadvantages. This formed the framework for Volkswagen to combine both transmission concepts into one completely. The twin-clutch transmission, also known as the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) or dual-clutch transmission, is an automated transmission that can change gears faster than any other geared transmission. Twin-clutch transmissions deliver more power and better control than a traditional automatic transmission and faster performance than a manual transmission.

ELECTROMAGNETIC SHOCK ABSORBER

An electromagnetic shock absorber for a vehicle, comprising: a wheel-side member to be connected to a wheel holder that holds a wheel of the vehicle ;a body-side member to be connected to a mount portion that is provided in a body of the vehicle, and movable relative to said wheel-side member upon a movement of said wheel holder and said mount portion toward and away from each other.A damping force generator having an electromagnetic motor that includes a stationary element and a movable element movable relative to each other, said stationary element having an electromagnetic coil, said movable element having a permanent magnet, said damping force generator being capable of generating, based on a force generated by said electromagnetic motor, a damping force acting against a relative movement of said wheel-side member and said body-side member, wherein said electromagnetic motor has an axis that extends in a both-members-relative-movement direction as a direction of the relative movement of said wheel-side member and said body-side member, wherein said stationary element is supported by said wheel-side member via an elastic body such that said stationary element is movable relative to said wheel-side member in the both-members-relative-movement direction.
